What to wear to The Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is the jewel in the National Hunt racing calendar with race prize money second only to the Grand National. Held every year in March at Cheltenham Racecourse, set in the beautiful English Cotswolds, it is a chance to see the elite of the jump racing world compete across four spectacular days.

The ‘Cheltenham Roar’, the sound of the crowd cheering on the riders, can be heard right across the town, and the atmosphere during The Festival is electric. The Gold Cup, the most prestigious and sought after title in jump racing is run on the final day, with jockeys competing over a gruelling 3 miles, with 22 fences to tackle. Perhaps the most famous horse to compete in the Gold Cup was Best Mate, who won the race in 2002, 2003 and 2004. His ashes are buried next to the winning post at the racecourse, a fitting resting place for a racing legend.

What to Wear at the Cheltenham Festival

Mens Cheltenham Outfit

When not looking at the action on the course, look in the stands. Although there is no dress code at Cheltenham, it is a celebration British clothing. The Festival is the ultimate country style catwalk, and unlike other events in the racing calendar the emphasis is on tweed and traditional British cloths. The weather can be bitingly cold, so the choice is not just a sartorial decision; tweed, corduroy and lambswool are the perfect defence against the elements.

The Covert Coat

The garment most famously associated with the Festival is the covert coat, and as the originators of the style, we feel a small glow of pride on seeing the coat in the stands and on the trainers and owners. The covert coat combines practicality and elegance, and teamed with the House Check tweed suit and a trilby hat it will make the wearer look effortlessly smart and totally in keeping with his surroundings. The final touches are provided by a country tie, paisley silk scarf and hank.

The event is a great opportunity for ladies to wear a tweed suit; nothing looks more elegant at the meet than our beautifully tailored jacket and skirt. Add a matching waistcoat and bag into the outfit and you will keep warm in style. Top your outfit with a fur trilby or fedora and accessorise with a fur collar and gloves. Boots are a smart choice for footwear, and Cordings Chelsea or Riding styles are feminine and practical.
