Shooting Jackets

What is a shooting jacket?

A shooting jacket is a type of jacket that has been especially designed for hunting or clay pigeon shooting. Shooting jackets are crafted to provide comfort, protection, and functionality for the shooter whilst in the field.

How to choose the right shooting jacket?

Your shooting jacket should allow for a full range of motion, especially in the arms and the shoulders. Some shooting jackets have what is called an ‘action back, which features two pleats running along the back of the shoulder. These provide extra fabric to allow the wearer to move their arms freely without the jacket feeling tight or restrictive. Bellow pockets are another important feature, these provide storage room for cartridges and other supplies whilst out in the field.

Do shooting jackets have padding?

Yes, shooting jackets often have padding, particularly in key areas such as the shoulders and elbows. The padding in shooting jackets is typically designed to be relatively light to avoid adding unnecessary bulk or hindering movement. It may be made of specialised fabrics or other impact-absorbing materials that offer a balance of protection and flexibility.

How to clean a shooting jacket?

Shooting jackets should be dry cleaned only and should never be put in a washing machine.

What does "action back" mean, and do I need it if I'm not shooting?

The term 'action back' refers to a jacket that features pleats in the shoulders of the garment that allow for freedom of movement. Unlike regular jackets, that are designed to be fitted across the upper back, an action back jacket allows the wearer to cock a gun without the rest of the jacket riding up the body and restricting movement. If you're not shooting or engaging in some kind of physical activity, an action back jacket would simply serve as a statement piece.

Is a tweed shooting jacket waterproof - how does it perform in wet weather?

A shooting jacket is not 100% waterproof. Although tweed is not waterproof, the tightly packed wool fibres cause light to moderate rainfall to bead and run off the surface rather than penetrate immediately, giving you reasonable protection in a shower.

What do I wear under a field jacket - how does the layering system work?

On a British shoot, your outfit should reflect the tradition and formality of the sport. Under your jacket, you should always wear a shirt, and tie. The standard choice is a tattersall or check shirt. These shirts have a generous cut and are often crafted from insulating fabrics like wool or brushed cotton; so are perfect for the field. Your tie should feature a country motif and, ideally, should be crafted from wool. Some shooters decide to wear a tweed or merino waistcoat to act as an extra layer of warmth.
