Tattersall Shirts
What is a tattersall shirt?
A tattersall shirt is a pale cream or white shirt that features a woven check pattern consisting of two or three contrasting colours. The name derives from Richard Tattersall who was an 18th Century horse auctioneer in London. His renowned sales ring used the classic check pattern on horse blankets, which over time was incorporated into clothing and has since become closely associated with British country dress.
How to wear a tattersall shirt?
The most natural pairing for a tattersall shirt is tucked into a pair of classic fit corduroy, tweed or moleskin trousers and worn with a V-neck lambswool jumper. As the colourful checks often do the work for you, it's best to wear this style of shirt with plain traditional country colours that complement the colours in the tattersall checks.
Can you wear tattersall shirts in warm weather?
Absolutely. Whilst tattersall shirts are often worn in cooler weather during Autumn and Winter, they are often made with natural breathable material such as cotton. Therefore, with the sleeves rolled up, a tattersall shirt can be a great addition to a summer wardrobe.
