Harry Meade has ascended to the pinnacle of the eventing world rankings for the first time in his career, securing the prestigious position of world number one.
British riders currently occupy the top three positions, with Tom McEwen maintaining his place as world number two and Ros Canter advancing to third.
This distinguished achievement follows a remarkable five-star spring season during which Mr. Meade attained notable results, including a third-place finish aboard Et Hop Du Matz and a fourth-place finish with Grafennacht at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event, as well as fourth and sixth-place finishes with Cavalier Crystal and Superstition, respectively, at the Mars Badminton Horse Trials.
Reflecting upon this milestone, Mr. Meade remarked, “Attaining the status of world number one is a profound honour and represents a significant career milestone. This accomplishment is not solely mine but is shared with the wider team whose unwavering dedication and support have been instrumental. I am immensely proud of their contributions.”
He further stated, “My involvement in eventing dates back to before I could walk; it remains the sport to which I am most devoted. While many challenges remain ahead, I shall take this rare opportunity to pause, reflect on our collective accomplishments, and take pride in what has been achieved.”
When questioned regarding the factors contributing to his recent success, Mr. Meade attributed it to a measured and considerate approach to training, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that his horses find enjoyment in their work. “My focus is consistently on the holistic development of each horse, both mentally and physically, with their long-term wellbeing in mind. Continuous learning is vital, and sustained success depends on the ability to adapt to the individual needs of a diverse range of horses.”
He also acknowledged the critical role played by his owners and sponsors, stating, “Their full confidence in our methods and commitment to a long-term vision is invaluable. It is my objective to honour their faith through continued excellence.”
Mr. Meade succeeds American rider Boyd Martin, who held the world number one ranking for a brief period of one month. Prior to Mr. Martin, British three-time Olympic medallist Tom McEwen occupied the top position from August 2024 until April 2025.
