Navy Original Covert Coat

This is our original Covert Coat, in a classic navy, a coat with a genuine claim to menswear history. The covert cloth is woven exclusively for Cordings by Fox Brothers in Somerset, the same West of England mill responsible for developing the original cloth to our specification over a century ago. Fox Brothers, founded in 1772, remains one of the finest weavers of cloth in the world, and this partnership has endured for good reason.

Woven as a fine wool covert twill, the cloth was originally developed at the turn of the last century for a coat robust enough for a day in the saddle, yet smart enough for town. Every detail on this coat is a working feature drawn from its riding origins, retained because it still serves a purpose today. A fly-front fastening conceals the buttons behind a covered placket. Four rows of stitching run along the cuffs and hem, once used to reinforce a hardworking riding coat, now a permanent design signature. Inside, a poacher's pocket, once large enough for a brace of game, is more likely today to hold a newspaper or a pair of gloves.
