Men's Loden Coats
What is Austrian loden coat?
An Austrian loden coat is a traditional outerwear garment originating in the Alpine regions of Austria, made from loden cloth, which is a densely woven, hefty wool fabric with a characteristically waxy, water-resistant surface. Loden cloth has been produced in the Austrian Tyrol for centuries, and the coat styles associated with it, particularly the Lodenmantal, remain closely tied to Central European country and hunting dress.
Is a Loden coat warmer than a standard wool overcoat?
It can depend on the weight of the cloth, but generally, yes, loden is warmer than standard wool. It's construction traps heat and is resistant to wind and moisture.
Why are loden coats used for hunting?
Loden cloth is well suited to field and hunting use. Its dense construction makes it naturally water and wind resistant without the need for chemical treatments, while its weight provides real warmth in harsh conditions. It is also very quiet as it does not make a noise when it rustles against thicket and foliage.
