The Mackintosh Inverness Cape

John Charles Cordings first opened his store in The Strand in 1839 offering a collection of practical outerwear, made using cutting edge technology –‘vulcanised’ rubber bonded onto a sturdy cotton drill. His garments, created in collaboration with Thomas Hancock and Mackintosh were immediately hugely sought after. Practical and stylish they were the original performance coats – built to withstand the weather whilst allowing the weather to remain dry and clean underneath.

The Inverness Mackintosh Cape was part of the first collection in 1839 and became an instant hit as a riding coat, in the field and for the burgeoning motorised vehicle fraternity. Working with Thomas Hancock, we have reintroduced this classic style with all the original features. Arm straps, throat tab, deep buttoned back vent and integral cape make it as practical today as it was nearly two hundred years ago. Individually hand made in Scotland by craftsmen using methods that have been applied since 1824 this is a truly unique garment, owning one is to own a piece of history.
