British Jackets

British Jackets and tailoring are closely associated with timeless, understated style.

What makes a British jacket unique?

British jackets often have a much more assertive silhouette than their European or American counterparts. They have a distinct waisted cut with a more constructed shoulder and lapel which creates a more formal shape to give the appearance of good posture. British jackets tend to feature a longer jacket length, a double vent at the back and are constructed with heavier, more tightly woven wools.

What materials are Cordings Jackets made from?

We, at Cordings, have a variety of Jackets made from a selection of natural materials. We avoid using any kind of synthetic materials, such as polyester, as much as possible. The majority of our Jackets are crafted from 100% British wool, as this is the more traditional material. During the warmer summer months, we have linen, gabardine and silk jackets as part of the collection alongside our more traditional 'Winter cloths' such as tweed, corduroy and moleskin.

What are jacket fabric weights and how to choose the right one.

The fabric weight is of a jacket is measured in ounces (oz) or grams per square metre (gsm) and refers to how heavy the cloth is. 7oz - 9oz is considered to be lightweight; suits for warmer weather that are more breathable and drapey. 10oz - 12oz is a mid-weight, the perfect spot for all-year-round tailoring and works well across the seasons. 13oz and above is the more traditional British cloth weight, designed to be more insulating in colder weather, often made from thick insulating fabrics like wool.

Are Cordings jackets fully lined?

Yes, the vast majority of our jackets are fully lined in viscose featuring beautiful countryside motifs. Occasionally we design a garment with butterfly or half lining to alter the drape of the jacket.
