How well your suit fits is more important than fabric, colour, weight of the cloth or design. If your suit does not fit you well, even if it is of beautiful quality, it will not look good. The collar should sit cleanly against the back of the neck with no pulling or gaping. The shoulder seam should end precisely at the edge of the shoulder, no further. Across the chest, the jacket should button without strain and lie flat, with enough room to place a hand flat inside the front but no excess fabric beyond that. The jacket sleeve should reveal approximately half an inch of shirt cuff. Trouser seat and thighs should allow comfortable movement without excess fabric, and the trouser break at the shoe is a matter of preference, though the traditional length or trouser in Britain is that your socks should only be seen when you're sat down.

Canvas construction refers to the internal structure of a suit jacket. A canvassed jacket contains a layer of wool canvas that is stitched between the outer cloth and the lining, running through the chest and lapels. The alternative is a fused jacket, where the interlining is glued rather than stitched. Fused construction is faster and cheaper to produce but tends to bubble and delaminate over time, particularly after dry cleaning. A full or half canvas suit is a mark of genuine quality and represents a significant difference in both longevity and drape.

A British business suit is appropriate across a wide range of occasions in the US, and although we're biased, British tailoring is some of the best in the world. In a professional context it is ideal. Beyond the office, a well-chosen suit works for weddings, graduations, evening engagements, and smarter social occasions. The slightly more structured and formal character of British tailoring tends to read as polished and authoritative in American professional contexts, where it is often perceived as a step above the domestic norm.

Wool suits should be dry cleaned as infrequently as possible, as repeated dry cleaning strips the natural lanolin from the fibres and shortens the life of the cloth. Between wears, hang your suit on a shaped wooden hanger and allow it to rest for at least a day before wearing again, giving the fibres time to recover and any moisture to dissipate.

Worsted wool is produced by combing the wool fibres so that they lie parallel before spinning, resulting in a smooth and tightly twisted yarn. It is the standard cloth for business suiting, valued for its sharp appearance, resistance to creasing, and durability. A cloth between 260gsm and 320gsm is the most practical choice for year-round business wear in the US, offering enough substance to drape well and hold its shape without becoming uncomfortable in warmer offices or milder weather.

Birdseye is a weave characterised by small dotted or diamond shapes evenly distributed across the cloth surface, resembling the eye of a bird when viewed closely. From a distance it reads as a solid colour. It is an excellent choice for formal office environments, client-facing roles, and occasions where a clean, authoritative appearance is required. Herringbone is a more visible V-shaped weave pattern that gives the cloth a distinctive directional texture. It carries a slightly more relaxed and characterful quality than a plain or birdseye weave, sitting well in smart business casual contexts, country settings, and occasions where a degree of personal style is appropriate without sacrificing formality.

The safest and most versatile shirt choice with a British business suit is a a cotton Oxford or poplin a cotton Oxford or poplin. The tie becomes the principal point of expression. A plain or subtly textured silk tie, in navy, burgundy, or forest green works with almost any cloth. A regimental stripe adds a classically British character, while a small repeating pattern such as a neat paisley or geometric gives a degree of personality without undermining formality. The tie should always be silk and should be tied in a knot proportionate to the collar spread, a half Windsor or four-in-hand being the most appropriate for British tailoring.
