Knitwear Know-How

Scottish knitwear is renown the world over, it has a heritage dating back centuries. What makes Scottish knitwear so unique and prized the world over?

It all starts with a good yarn.

Natural wool yarns are distinct; Lambswool, Shetland and Donegal are instantly recognisable. They can be dyed to rich lustrous shades and by mixing different fibres, stunning melange (or mixed) effects can be created.

Where does Cordings lambswool come from?

Sourced from a mill that has been spinning woollen yarns in Huddersfield since 1766, the quality of our lambswool jumper collection starts with using this superlative yarn. Lambswool is defined as the first shearing of a sheep, generally at 7 months old.

Is wool knitwear hard wearing?

This fibre is renowned for its resilience. Soft, elastic and robust, it is naturally water repellent and has good insulating properties, characteristics that make it ideal for everyday use.

How do you care for wool knitwear?

Firstly, wool is inherently dirt repellent, so avoid washing unless absolutely necessary, also wool has inherent antibacterial properties, so unlike synthetics does not hold odour. Less washing will prolong the life of the garment and is better for the environment. With advances in textile technology, and with the wonders of modern washing machines, it is often the case that knitwear can be washed in a machine. But…. If you want to make sure your garment stays in tip top condition, hand washing is definitely best.

Is wool eco friendly?

Wool is natural, sustainable and unlike synthetics fibres such as polyester is biodegradable. Cordings work with small mills and makers who take their eco responsibilities very seriously.

How to dry a wool jumper?

To dry a wool jumper, gently reshape it on a clean, dry towel, absorbing excess water by rolling the towel and pressing gently. Lay the jumper flat to dry on a towel or mesh drying rack, avoiding direct heat sources. Allow it to air dry in a well-ventilated area, flipping occasionally for even drying. Avoid hanging to prevent stretching.
